Presentation of the Collections
Overview
The permanent collections present the best of the fine art collections of the city of Liège.
Through a chronological journey, from the sixteenth century to the present, the artistic creations from Liège and abroad are presented, supported by an educational device in four languages.
Lower Gallery
The collections open with ancient art, where Liège painting is honored, notably with Lambert Lombard, the painter and emblematic humanist of the Renaissance.
Throughout the visit, renowned artists are to be (re)discovered: Ingres, Monet, Pissarro, Signac, Magritte, Magnelli, Appel, Van Dongen, without forgetting our best artists Closson, de Witte, Evenepoel, Meunier, Magritte and Rops. They take the visitor on a journey leading up to contemporary art; a rendezvous with the modernity of art, discernable at all periods.
A highlight of the trip is devoted to works purchased during the sale of Lucerne (Switzerland) in 1939. Then regarded as art dégénéré (degenerate art), they are now part of the Belgian “treasures”: Picasso, Gauguin, Ensor, Laurencin, Marc, Kokoschka, Lieberman, Pascin, and Chagall.
The black Gallery
Particularly delicate and fragile, the works on paper are housed in the black gallery equipped with a lighting system that only activates once a visitor arrives.
Several thousand pieces from the 16th to the 20th century make up these collections (drawings, engravings, posters, comic boards, etc.). Thanks to this artistic wealth of works, two to three times a year, a new exhibition focusing on an artist, a particular theme, or a specific technique is presented.
Artwork of the Month
Each month, the collections are presented in a new light, thanks to the selection and commentary on a work by a member of the Museum’s curatorial team.
